Graceanne is the widow of a war hero with twins who are three-years-old. She's poor but happy. The Duke of Ware is her former husband's elder brother and needs an heir, one of her sons is the best candidate. She doesn't want to part with either of them. But he's a charming rake.

Juneclaire Beaumont lived as a poor relation before leaving for London after a crisis. She finds herself in a stable with a handsome stranger and when she leaves he decides to hunt her down, not an easy task.

Both stories are pretty predicatble but interesting. ( )

I really enjoyed both short novels. I had read Father Christmas before and enjoyed it the second time around. Two very charming, very humorous christmas-themed regency tales. Definitely among my favorites of Metzger's work. I had read Father Christmas before and remembered it fondly but couldn't quite remember it clearly so I got it out of the library. Hadn't the read the other one before -- not quite as good but it had some great puns. ( )

# Father Christmas is the story of Leland Warrington, the Duke of Ware, who needs an heir. He's been married twice, both wives deceased, both childless. His cousin who'd been his heir has also died, leaving behind a widow and twin 3-year-old sons. The eldest would be his heir, of course, but Leland doesn't want to simply assure the title and family name continues--he wants to be a father.

Drunk one night, he composes a letter to his cousin's widow, informing her he'll take the elder boy to raise, vaguely assuming she wouldn't mind. He thinks better of it in the morning, but his efficient servants have already posted the letter.

This sets the stage for the sparks to fly between an enraged Graceanne and the well-meaning but clueless Duke. The story is made even more entertaining by the antics of the twins, who steal the duke's heart as well as the reader's.

# Christmas Wishes is about Juneclair Beaumont, who's been raised as a poor relation, with everything that implies. Just before Christmas, she reaches the last straw, and she sets off for London with her only friend, Pansy.

The Earl of St. Cloud, "Merry," is also on the road, when he begins seeing a trail of belongings that Juneclair has been forced to abandon. Recognizing a damsel in distress, he takes her with him, and they're forced to spend the night together in a stable.

Recognizing further that she's been compromised, Merry offers marriage. Juneclair declines and disappears. The rest of the story involves Merry tracking her down, following Juneclair's unmistakable trail, and convincing her that it's not just duty but love. ( )

Traditional Regency romance, very sweet, no sex, not much humour, and not clever enough. Sweet but a bit too syrupy for me. I like my romances with more bite. Read the first one - Father Christmas all the way through but skimmed (very briefly) the second. Not a keeper. ( )
