This is a great book to show kids the friendship between a person and their dog and the steps they take to care for their dog. Annie learns how to care for her puppy by figuring out what her puppy is saying to her and even when she goes to school she learns her puppy will be there waiting for her when she comes home. It is great story for children to see the relationship between a person and their dog.

This book helps social-moral development because it follows a young girl who makes a trusting relationship with her dog. The young girl starts to also consider what the dog needs by learning the dog's cues for food, for example. The book also shows how people can rely on their pets and their pets can sometimes become their best friends.

There is not better children's book than one about the love between a child and their pet. It is a wonderful way to show children emotions, feelings, and positive outcomes. And the characters Annie and Bess show that best friends don't have to be both human.
