In People of Darkness, Hillerman's first novel to introduce Officer Jim Chee of the Navajo Tribal Police, Chee is forced to use all of his powers of deduction and insight to extricated himself from a deadly series of incidences involving a mysterious millionaire, a sinister, peyote-eating Indian cult, and what the New York Times called "an ingenious long-acting way of murder." If you are a fan of the southwest and mysteries the series of books by Tony Hillerman are good reads. Jim Chee is a young tribal policeman who is torn between the old ways of the shaman and new police duties. The books give a lot of insight to the way life on the reservation works today. They also have a good mystery at their core.
