A heralded writer of epic fantasy, Robin Hobb has given readers worlds within worlds in her heroic Farseer and Liveship Traders trilogies. Now she takes the final step in the breathtaking trilogy of the Tawny Man, as the tale of FitzChivalry Farseer comes to an epic end. Rife with boundless adventure and unforgettable characters, Fool's fate is destined to become a classic of the genre. Assassin, spy, and Skillmaster, FitzChivalry Farseer, now known only as man-at-arms Tom Badgerlock, has become firmly ensconced in the queen's court at Buckkeep. Only a few are aware of his fabled, tangled past-and the sacrifices he made to survive it. And fewer know of his possession of the Skill magic. With Prince Dutiful, his assassin-mentor Chade, and the simpleminded yet strongly Skilled Thick, FitzChivalry strives to aid the prince on a quest that could ultimately secure peace between the Six Duchies and the Outislands-and win Dutiful the hand of the Narcheska Elliania. For the Narcheska has set the prince on an unfathomable task: to behead a dragon trapped in ice-the legendary Icefyre, on the island of Aslevjal. Yet not all the clans of the Outislands support the prince's effort to behead their legendary defender. Are there darker forces at work behind the Narcheska's imperious demand? As the prince and his coterie set sail, FitzChivalry works behind the scenes, playing nursemaid to the ailing Thick, while striving to strengthen their Skill -- ultimately bringing his unacknowledged daughter into the web of the Skill magic, where the truth must finally unfold. The quest emerges amid riddles that must be unraveled, a clash of cultures, and the ultimate betrayal. For knowing that the Fool has foretold he will die on the island of ice, FitzChivalry has plotted with Chade to leave his dearest friend behind. But fate cannot so easily be defied.… (mere)

Got four stars because I just read all three of this series back to back over 3 months. And I did read them, hardly skipped a word despite them being 700 pages each. Still told entirely from Fitz/Tom's point of view with only hints of the Fool - but enough to satisfy. I may have come across these books at a time when they were what I needed but despite the escapism there is plenty of substance in them and comfort in being certain that she won't let her characters down. Even if she kills a character they will get a good death (if they deserve it) and any suffering will be character building in the long run. Totally unlike life! ( )

I enjoyed the third installment of The Tawny Man Trilogy. It is not a stand alone book. It is the epic conclusion of fascinating journey. The first trilogy centering on FitzChivalry Farseer, concludes with Fitz finding peace living as Tom Badgerlock with Nighteyes but otherwise alone in the woods. In the Tawney Man trilogy, Fitz is 15 years older, living with his foster son Hap. He seems satisfied and content. But the strings of Buck keep and the magic of wit and skill call him back. Robin Hobb ties up the series with a quest to find the dragon Icefyre; the resolution of the White Prophet’s future and Catalyst/Changer reaching, fighting, and clawing his way in service and with loyalty. Many story lines are finished, but enough are available to keep open the world for the next trilogy. ( )

I followed Robin Hobb's novels for a long time, and to finally reach this novel and its end was disappointing in more ways than one. I first picked up "Assassin's Apprentice" a few years ago and have been reading Hobb ever since, but I don't think I will continue on to any other series after this one. ( )

A great ending to a series. It goes from tragic, to happy, to tragic so many times it's often hard to know what to expect next.

The entire series is great and definitely worth a read, and I'm kind of sad that it's over. ( )

I had a few expectations as to an ending, and was greatly satisfied to not see the ending as I had imagined.

I love happy endings. I really do. And I love them even more when they are preceded by so much heartache, misery, and sacrifice. Such a happy reversal was not forced in this novel. There was much time and effort devoted to it, with careful plotting and recognition of consequences. This, more than anything, was a much more satisfying than the official resolution of action. Hell, the main climax came two-thirds into the novel, and the resolution could have filled a more traditional-length novel.

I actually loved the departure, and despite the blatant wish-fulfillment kind of ending, I am happy. I am satisfied. Molly may not be a fully realized character the way I'd wish, but her evident regard of poor old Fitz is still heartening.
