"The stories of West Africa are about men and animals, about kings, warriors, and hunters. They tell about clever people and stupid people, about good ones and bad ones, about how things and animals got to be how they are. Sometimes they are just tall tales. There are stories about Frog, Rabbit, Turtle, Guinea Fowl, and all the other animals that West Africans know. Some of the stories make you think. Some make you laugh. Here are some of the stories of the people of the forests, the seacoast, the hills, and the plains. The people of West Africa give them to you."… (mere)

This is a photocopy of the book. The Cow-Tail Switch, and Other West African Stories by Harold Courlander is a collection of West African folk tales about men and animals, kings, warriors, and farmers. First published in 1947, it was a Newbery Honor recipient in 1948.

A collection of traditional stories from West African. Fun and interesting - I always love a good Anansi story and he's nicely represented here. ( )

The stories of West Africa are about men and animals, about kings, warriors, and hunters. They tell about clever people and stupid people, about good ones and bad ones, about how things and animals got to be how they are. Some stories in this book will make you think. Some will make you laugh. All of them are retold with folk spirit full of generosity and vitality. Two things that make Courlander's work stand out, even are: 1) his well written prose, and 2) the notes, which give the reader more information about the story, where it came from, and how to understand it in the context of the culture that produced it. This second point is especially important today, when a lot of books of so-called "African" stories are published without any background information at all. ( )
