An epic with oversized characters, this novel makes an interesting road-trip through the American west in the 1870s. The two central characters, former Texas Rangers, are built from typical cowboy archetypes. With nearly 900 pages to work with the author is able to give both men some depth. Their personalities carry the novel along even when the trail begins to meander at times. It is a page turner and an essential read for the Western genre, yet it falls flat in many ways. The author's imagination fails in respect to women he's created. The prostitute with a heart of gold is treated as a source of titillation and humor more than for the brutality of being forced to sleep with hundreds and hundreds of men of survive. It feels at times that we're actually supposed to sympathize with the men (who have used her) that are "ruined" by her charms/good looks. The author can better communicate the hardships that the horses and pigs endure than the women. Native Americans are mostly bloodthirsty, depraved savages on this trip.

I get the impression that the author wanted the readers to like and identify with the Rangers. The mostly positive reviews would lead me to believe that most readers do. That said, I hope my fellow readers appreciate that these men essential see the women, the land, the Native Americans, the animals all as resources for exploitation and pleasure. ( )

This is now one of my favorite books of all time. It was also my first western novel and I will be reading more of them in the future. ( )

fiction/western (cowboy culture--fighting natives and murderers, plus mixing with womenfolk) [pulitzer #21]. ( )

A bromance of the old west, filled with racist and sexist stereotypes.

The author himself eventually expressed regret about the popularity of the novel. In the preface to the 2000 edition he wrote: "It's hard to go wrong if one writes at length about the Old West, still the phantom leg of the American psyche. I thought I had written about a harsh time and some pretty harsh people, but, to the public at large, I had produced something nearer to an idealization; instead of a poor man's Inferno, filled with violence, faithlessness and betrayal, I had actually delivered a kind of Gone With The Wind of the West, a turnabout I'll be mulling over for a long, long time." A ragtag group of cowboys going on an adventure of chance encounters in the late 1800’s to a place they heard of but don’t actually know if it exists. The book starts out in Lonesome Dove, Texas, a small town on the border with Mexico, with two former Texas Rangers watching horse stables.. very slow at first.. lots of drinking and being lazy.. But picks up pace.. By far one of my favourite characters is in this book, a cowboy who drove you crazy but would back you with confidence no matter what.. Also some very strong female characters who developed through the book.. But also seemed every female was a “wh0re” at one point which seemed a bit misogynistic.. overall a great story, definitely recommended reading.. Also to note, I read this after playing RDR2 so I was in the cowboy mood.. lol. ( )

All of Mr. McMurtry's antimythic groundwork -his refusal to glorify the West - works to reinforce the strength of the traditionally mythic parts of ''Lonesome Dove,'' by making it far more credible than the old familiar horse operas. These are real people, and they are still larger than life. The aspects of cowboying that we have found stirring for so long are, inevitably, the aspects that are stirring when given full-dress treatment by a first-rate novelist. Toward the end, through a complicated series of plot twists, Mr. McMurtry tries to show how pathetically inadequate the frontier ethos is when confronted with any facet of life but the frontier; but by that time the reader's emotional response is it does not matter - these men drove cattle to Montana!

All America lies at the end of the wilderness road, and our past is not a dead past, but still lives in us. Our forefathers had civilization inside themselves, the wild outside. We live in the civilization they created, but within us the wilderness still lingers. What they dreamed, we live, and what they lived, we dream.

Fictions - in my case, novels only, to the tune of about thirty - starts in tactile motion; pecking out a few sentences on a typewriter; sentences that might encourage me and perhaps a few potential readers to press on. (Preface)
