A witty and sophisticated mystery featuring bestselling author Josephine Tey's popular Inspector Alan Grant, a beloved character created by a woman considered to be one of the greatest mystery writers of all time. Literary sherry parties were not Alan Grant's cup of tea. But when the Scotland Yard Inspector arrived to pick up actress Marta Hallard for dinner, he was struck by the handsome young American photographer, Leslie Searle. Author Lavinia Fitch was sure her guest "must have been something very wicked in ancient Greece," and the art colony at Salcott St. Mary would have agreed. Yet Grant heard nothing more of Searle until the news of his disappearance. Had Searle drowned by accident or could he have been murdered by one of his young women admirers? Was it a possible case of suicide or had the photographer simply vanished for reasons of his own?… (mere)

Delightful. The sleight of hand goes several ways. It's not very plausible but then most magic tricks aren't after the fact.

(Anticipatory sadness that this series isn't nearly long enough.) ( )

The famous American photographer Leslie Searle, seeks out Walter Whitmore at a London party, as they had a mutual friend in common. As a result he is invited to stay at the family home in Salcott St Mary. But then Searle disappears and Grant is brought in to investigate his disappearance/murder.
Very enjoyable, interesting tale ( )

Detective Inspector Alan Grant is at a literary party for author Lavina Fitch to meet up with Marta Hallard, a well-known celebrity. He runs into a well-dressed and handsome young man who is trying to meet radio broadcaster Walter Whitmore. Grant manages to make the introductions, which result in the yung man being invited to the Fitch country house for the weekend.
The village where the country house is has become populated by many from the artistic and theatrical world, In fact, Marta Hallard is among the residents.

Leslie Searle, the good-looking young man, seems to draw attention wherever he goes. His looks, manners and reputation put him in the spotlight. Searles is a well-known photographer with a list of clients from the celebrity world.; another feature that adds to people wanting to meet him.

At the Fitch country house, Searle meets Fitch’s niece, Liz Garroway, and Liz’s over-protective step-mother. Walter Whitmore also lives there, and he and Liz have an understanding that they will marry someday, though it is not obvious from Whitmore’s actions or attention to Liz.

Searle proposes he and whitmore collaborate on a book about travelling down the Rushmere River, that runs nearby. Searle will photograph it and Whitmore will write about it. To get the material for the book, the two will canoe down the river and camp along the way.

While on the journey, tension rises between the two men and one night Searle disappears after leaving a tavern both men were seen in.

Did Searles slip and fall into the fast moving river? Did Whitmore push him? Did Searles just walk away and vanish? A number of theories come up and it is up to Grant to sort it out. Suspects abound as there are those who liked Searles and those who didn’t.

The ending was completely unexpected, but it was explained to my satisfaction. ( )

'Why do you listen to him?'

'Well, there's a dreadful fascination about it, you know. One thinks: Well, that's the absolute sky-limit of awfulness, than which nothing could be worse. And so next week you listen to see if it really can be worse. It's a snare. It's so awful that you can't even switch off. You wait fascinated for the next piece of awfulness, and the next. And you are still there when he signs off.'
