JPS is pleased to make available a new, more compact edition of the landmark publication, Etz Hayim: A Torah Commentary. This book, a publication of the Conservative movement, was produced through a joint venture of the Rabbinical Assembly, the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, and The Jewish Publication Society. This new, smaller edition is a convenient alternative to the standard hardcover edition and is ideal for personal study and travel. It contains all the material in the original, excerpt for the essays. The Bible text, translations, and commentaries as well as the blessings, artwork, maps, glossary and other reference tools for the worshiper and student of Torah reader are included. The sturdy, coated paper cover is designed to stand up well, even with heavy use.… (mere)

This commentary is well-balanced, shows the research, gives clear explainations, and has a set of wonderful pre-face pages. Fascinating to read, and obviously essential to Torah study.

A landmark event for Conservative Judaism. Based on the massive 5 volume JPS Torah Commentary Series and the JPS Bible Commentary: Haftarot. A replacement for the much loved "Hertz" Humash which used the JPS Tanakh from 1917. Etz Hayim uses the current JPS Tanakh translation of 1985-1999. Highly useful for personal use, group study, and in the congregation! ( )

This is a phenomenal introduction to the Torah! The translation is great...the Hebrew Font is very good...the commentary is top notch - think of it as the poor man's JPS commentary set on the Torah! There are several essays in the back (front for the non-Hebraic) that are very well written and fascinating. I highly recommend this commentary to Jewish and Christian readers who desire to hear the voices of our ancestors in the faith as they wrestle with the very word of G_d. ( )

A must for weekly Torah studies. I don't agree with all of the analysis, but for the most part, the text is an enjoyable read. ( )
