While certainly dystopian, not the clear cut specimen I expected it to be. In some ways, the book is more of an ode to creative thought than it is a cautionary tale of society gone wrong. ( )

I first read this book my senior of high school when I enrolled in a Science Fiction Literature class as an elective because I wasn't good at art. I recall being fascinated by the main character's room of television-like walls where his wife spent all day immersed in the worlds of imaginary people projected therein. The novel spoke about people wearing "sea shells" in their ears and going about their day in a fog of aloneness, ignoring everyone else. And the books. A book where fireman don't put out fires, but they burn books. Because who would want do anything as dangerous and superfluous as reading a book?

Fast forward 20 years and this book keeps coming to mind. Our televisions keep getting bigger and bigger. People spend all but the bulk of their time online speaking to strangers (she says as she's typing online to strangers. And 9 out of every 10 kids I see walking out of our local high school has earbuds hanging from their noggins. And it seems the more ability we have for freedom of speech with the advance of the "information age" that began in the '90's, the less room we have to voice an opinion that differs from the current social climate.

Are we finally living in Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451? I'll let you be the judge. ( )

Since the recent passing of Ray Bradbury I had been looking for a copy of this in my local book shops without any luck. In fact, a small independent book shop near hadn't heard of the book or the author, I guess that's why they are closing down. Last week I found a copy in Milton Keynes and snatched it up, I've been meaning to read this for quite a while.

I managed to get through the book in the space of about 4 hours during a long quite period at work. This was due to the time I had available more than the book. Although it was a decent enough read it wasn't exactly gripping. I can't say whether this was down to the book entirely or in part because it followed my reading of Alone in Berlin.

I liked the futuristic world Bradbury creates. It is pretty interesting and in truth perhaps less far fetched than we would hope it would be. I don't see books being burned in the future but, in their paper form they may well be under threat albeit from e-books.

I don't agree that television is, or has been the great evil and I'm not convinced that TV has had all that much of a detrimental effect on the numbers of people reading these days. I don't know if more or less people read of even how well it could be measured. It remains an interesting argument even if it is swayed by the fact that by his own admission Bradbury pretty much lived in libraries for a large part of his life.

I didn't really engage with any of the characters except maybe the fire chief Captain Beatty. That is down to the fact the his is portrayed as a fearsome beast of a man. Although it isn't a character as such, the idea of the mechanical hound is a great one and really helps paint a visual picture. ( )

I'm really glad that teaching hasn't yet turned me off books that I already liked. And in this case, teaching Fahrenheit 451 made me enjoy and appreciate it even more.

The most profound thing I learned the second time around?

This book is the first book I've ever had to REALLY teach, and the process taught me how seriously I take the ability to read for granted. How a propos, considering the novel's content, yes? Apart from the subject matter, I came to it as a 26-year-old graduate student (with an English degree in there somewhere), and I was oblivious as to how complicated this novel is to teenagers and especially teenagers who don't read (or can't)...even down to not knowing "Mildred" is a woman's name, which I didn't even think to THINK that it's a rather antiquated name now. I was ready to blast through this baby and had all these cool ideas for discussions and activities...and...and...the kids were failing everything I threw at them. Silly me. Poor them. I finally sat down to take apart each paragraph, each statement, so that I could show them the complexities that they had to pick up to piece the story together. It was during this process I grew to love the book a bit more. But I liked Clarisse! Beatty's manipulation? Faber and society? Parlor walls and Seashells? Seriously, Mildred leaves Montag--you've got to be kidding! You mean he torched him?! When they finally started to get it, even on a very surface level (as with some), just added that much more of a totally cool and admittedly Hallmark-esque moment to the experience. Kinda gross.

Or whatever. Just a book. ( )

This intriguing idea might well serve as a foundation on which to build a worst of all possible worlds. And to a certain extent it does not seem implausible. Unfortunately, Bradbury goes little further than his basic hypothesis. The rest of the equation is jerry-built.

It doesn't matter what you do, he said, so long as you change something from the way it was before you touched it into something that's like you after you take your hands away.
But that's the wonderful things about man; he never gets so discouraged or disgusted that he gives up doing it all over again, because he knows very well it is important and worth the doing.
But remember that the Captain belongs to the most dangerous enemy of truth and freedom, the solid unmoving cattle of the majority. Oh, God, the terrible tyranny of the majority.
I'm afraid of children my own age. they kill each other. Did it always use to be that way? My uncle says no. Six of my firends have been shot in the last year alone. Ten of them died in car wrecks. I'm afraid of them and they don't like me because I'm afraid. My uncle says his grandfather remembered when children didn't kill each other. But that was a long time ago when they had things different. They believed in responsibility, my uncle says. Do you know, I'm responsible. I was spanked when I needed it, years ago. And I do all the shopping and housecleaning by hand.
The same infinite detail and awareness could be projected through the radios and televisors, but are not. No, no, it's not books at all you're looking for! Take it where you can find it, in old phonograph records, old motion pictures, and in old friends; look for it in nature and look for it in yourself. Books were only one type of receptacle where we stored a lot of things we were afraid we might forget. There is nothing magical in them at all. The magic is only in what books say, how they stitched the patches of the universe together into one garment for us. Of course you couldn't know this, of course you still can't understand what I mean when I say all this.
