I haven't intentionally read and reread the lines in any book as much as I have in this one. Bradbury really haunts me. I've been reading his short story collection recently, and they reach somewhere very deep within you and wring you out. Fahrenheit 451 will always be one of those reads that i keep coming back to, both for revision and references in the time to come. ( ![]() 7/10 A classic about censorship! A future where reading is banned and firemen now burn books, rather than put out fires. This whole concept is not far fetched...too many books today are already banned because someone or some group finds the book offensive. Before too long, this free will to read could be taken from us, and we could be forced to read what the government decides. Don't just read this book; read between the lines and discover our future of what is to come if we don't act soon. Per noi è molto più facile identificarsi in Montag, il pompiere che non vuole più bruciare i libri ma leggerli, piuttosto che in Winston, un uomo dei tanti che si ribella per sentirsi vivo ma sa di essere morto. this is really, really interesting. he's written this in a way, it seems, that it will always be relevant. there is always something a reader can say it reminds them of, or they can relate to, whether on the side of those in power or fighting them. i was surprised, at first, that he started the book with guy's transformation, not earlier. that basically from page 2 he was reconsidering his position. that felt really unusual to me, but i understand where he wanted to focus his pages and his words, on the redirection of society, not dwelling on the rest (and there is enough of that throughout to give us a fine idea of what it's like). i wonder about his idea of horror - the directed videos projected on the walls of your living room, and how he'd be floored and dismayed by our ability to carry those videos in our pockets, and stare at much smaller screens all the time, while ignoring not the world outside our walls but the world literally right in front of us. there is a lot to process here. it's not subtle or beautifully written, but it's well done and fiercely political. i appreciate that he's trying so hard to make people do something.
This intriguing idea might well serve as a foundation on which to build a worst of all possible worlds. And to a certain extent it does not seem implausible. Unfortunately, Bradbury goes little further than his basic hypothesis. The rest of the equation is jerry-built.
