Set in China, McClureis the story of Robert Baird McClure's twenty-five adventurous, dangerous years there as a dai fu,a doctor. McClure arrives in China in 1926 as a young bachelor. War is ever-present: the Nationalists fight the Communists, both parties fight the Japanese, and then Mao and the Communists take over the country. The story ends with the doctor's prayer to God for peace in this troubled land. This is a one-man play, with the actor playing not only McClure but also other characters, from a Scottish university registrar to a Chinese warlord.
