Simple stories, about every day people and events either every day or extraordinary in their lives. The style of writing matches the stories perfectly. Somehow, I found of most of the stories sad as ultimately nothing ever really changed or progressed but more or less stayed the same (a road engine or statue more or less...) ( )

One of the finest of R K Narayan. It was a collection worth keeping. It takes place in a fictional village called Malgudi. Though few stories had an abrupt ending , every story keeps us engaged till the end and the language was pretty simple and clear. Narayan gives a lucid account of everything that takes place in this beautiful village . His narrative literally teleports us to this small, beautiful and happy village, Malgudi. ( )

A collection of 32 subtly ironic stories à la Guy de Maupassant. The fictional town Malgudi is the functional setting, but what stands out are Narayan's honest characterisations. The cast includes tradesmen, craftsmen, entertainers, students, doctors, rich and poor, young and old. There's something here for everyone.

Interestingly, the inhabitants of this town drink coffee instead of chai (Indian tea). ( )
