I really enjoyed reading Yo! Yes? By Chris Raschka. It won a Caldecott Honor Medal, which shows that it’s a great book! While the book is very simple and has minimal words, it conveys a strong message that is great for children! It shows the acceptance and budding friendship between two boys of different races, despite their differences. One aspect that I love are the illustrations. While they are rather simple and just show two little boys, they are very detailed and show the difference between different cultures and races. The African American boy is wearing a t-shirt, shorts and untied sneakers, while the Caucaisn boy is wearing a button down shirt, sweater, long pants, and dress shoes. Overall, I think this is a great book to read to younger children to introduce them to the importance of acceptance. I really enjoyed reading Yo! Yes? By Chris Raschka. ( )

This book is short and only uses a couple of words but, it tells a good story. The only reason I gave it three stars is because I feel like it was a little boring. Because there were only a couple of words being used, I felt like I really had to pay attention. This book did have good illustrations. Overall, it was okay. I am not sure if I would be able to use this book in my future classroom. ( )

This book is very simple and reading it is easy. There are not many words on any page and the idea of friendship gets brought to the reader's attention. It is somewhat entertaining but does not have much to it. There is not much going on in the book and it is difficult to judge the story. A fun book yet not the most entertaining and lacks meaning. This picture book is very fun and playful, but also has a lot of hidden meaning. Even though the characters in the book only speak one or two words to each other at a time, the reader is able to put together what is happening through their body language and facial expressions. In the book, one boy expresses to the other boy that he has no friends through a few words. As he expresses this, he turns his body away from the other character, and has a grim look on his face. From this body language, the reader is able to tell that this boy is very sad. The other boy offers to be friends with the other boy right away upon hearing that he has no friends. This shows young readers the importance of extending friendship and being nice to those who may have no friends is a good thing to do. This message is proven as the characters are smiling and and holding hands after they decide to be friends. Also, I noticed away I noticed that the two characters presented in the book are of two different races. This shows young readers that two people who may look different from one another can be friends. Since there are very few words in this picture book, young readers can come up with their own ideas and reasons for what is happening in the book, and why this happened. ( )
