Good introduction to the lyrical poems of Robert Browning. Each of the poems has a beautiful illustration to go with it. The illustrations are good for helping children visualize the poem better. The poems in this collection are good for teaching conflict. Grades 4-12 ( )

With well-written introductions to each poem, and realistic illustrations, and excellent selections, this volume is one of my favorites in this series. It is not perfect. There are a few surprising omissions from Browning's shorter works (How they brought the news from Ghent to Aix," for example), and it was surprising to see "the Pied Piper" edited so much. Browning's poems are not short, and many of these poems would be better read aloud to young readers than read silently, but this book gives independent and guided learners a good place to begin.

Gr 7 Up - To say, as Gillooly does in her succinct introduction, that "Robert Browning is one of the most beloved English poets-and one of the most difficult to read" is an understatement. She does a remarkable job, however, of selecting the most accessible poems. ... Gillooly's clear introductions to each one give valuable assistance in understanding them. ... The presentation of each poem includes explanations of words and references that might be unfamiliar today. Throughout, Spector's spectacular, energy-filled paintings further illuminate the meanings of the poetry, providing historical details and defining settings visually. This is a fine introduction to the poetry of Browning, and in the hands of an astute teacher or parent, it can greatly increase an older student's appreciation for classical literature.
