Richter examines a wide range of primary documents to survey the responses of the peoples of the Iroquois League--the Mohawks, Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas, Senecas, and Tuscaroras--to the challenges of the European colonialization of North America. He demonstrates that by the early eighteenth century a series of creative adaptations in politics and diplomacy allowed the peoples of the Longhouse to preserve their cultural autonomy in a land now dominated by foreign powers. Richter adds a useful context, the role of French Canada. For most of the histories centered here in the Valley "Canada" is decidedly offstage - raiding parties come down from Canada and vanish again, Jesuits appear in the Valley and are martyred; I've never before seen such a balanced explanation that shows how the Iroquois were caught between the contending colonial empires right from Day One.
Various tidbits gleaned: First mention I've seen in a book of 'Lawrence'. Several of the survivors of the Massacre grew up to be interpreters. Several of these interpreters were Dutch-speakers who had no English. The role of 'Corlaer' then fell to the first Peter Schuyler. The Mohawks were down to as a few as 130 warriors by the 1690s. (
