A short film, based on the third act of Kerouac's play "The Beat Generation", which I just read! Another, stranger connection is that the transcript in this book mentions Ma Rainey, and I just saw a movie about her! Weird...

The strength of this book is the pictures! I think that they are stills from the film, but they are still pretty cool! The poem is in here, as is a script, or is it a transcript, of the short movie. And finally, there is a layout of photos with quotes from the movie under them, sort of like a storyboard. I still don't think the play makes a lot of sense, but I'm curious to see the film!

“The bishop says, What, holy, holy?” ( )

The photography, at once realistic and poetic, is by Robert Frank, whose remarkable picture-book, The Americans, was lately published by Grove Press. The direction is by Frank plus Alfred Leslie, a leading abstract-expressionist painter. They have got a lot out of their amateur, and doubtless refractory, charges not by teaching them how to “act” but by eavesdropping on them; the effect is spontaneous and alive. But the surprise, for me, was the narration by Jack Kerouac, which kept things rolling along on a tide of laughter and poetry... Kerouac shows an unexpected virtuosity at the great American art of kidding.
