Cute story of a gosling who loves red boots. Not sure my 2 year old really got it, but he likes red boots too so he thought it was ok. ( )

Gossie by Olivier Dunrea is apart of the series Gossie & Friends. This book is about a yellow gosling who loves to wear red boots. Gossie looses his boot, but then finds his boot and makes a new friend. This book is a good book for a kindergartener to read by themselves. ( )

I think these simple little stories, that are simply illustrated are so darn cute. ( )

I liked this book for various reasons. First, it could be used for a phonics lesson in an early childhood classroom or with ELLs to establish initial and final consonant sounds. This is the first part of the phonics continuum for emerging readers and writers. The book emphasis the G sound such as, ""Great boots" said Gossie. Gertie smiled.". The other emphasized consonant sound is the R and B sound. The main repeated phrase in this book is "bright red boots", others include, "bed, barn, run, rain, back, ride". I also like how the sentences are short with an easily identifiable verb, subject and predicate; example " She looked everywhere. Under the bed. *new page* "over the wall" *page* in the barn". It even has a significant sight word vocab as well like- she, the, in, could, every- that are repeated often throughout the book. Each page has a very detailed and realistic illustration, while still being cartoon enough to keep the attention of kids. This would be a good book to use for the entire first part of the phonics continuum. In addition to the learning aspect, the book is enjoyable to read which attracts children's attention, especially the younger ones. It is fun to read because it is a silly story which is ultimately about friends sharing a pair of boots. ( )
