This is a good kid read I reckon :O)
Charles, Meg & their friend Calvin 'tesser' through time to save Meg & Charle's dad with the help of the three Mrs. Unsurprisingly they encounter a few problems along the way.....
I pretty much finished this the day after I started it (I had a very lazy Saturday!) I enjoyed it but considering I didn't read it when I was little & was reading it totally from an adult's point of view I didn't have the 'childlike wonder' you sorta need for this series I reckon.
I found the changeover from science to Christianity a bit clunky although I don't think it would have really mattered so much if I was still little lol! It's very much a children's book in so much as it uses very simple language which I was sort of surprised about as it is sposed to be a scifi classic but that my be down to the fact I was reading the 'movie cover version'. Maybe they simplified the language a little, I don't know. Anyway, it's a very enjoyable read either way but I'm not going to put it in the library because it does mention Buddha & another false god & given that it's a kids book, I don't think that's appropriate.

Meg Murray is a wonderful character and she really shines in this book. This book starts all the wonderful l'Engle series off. This book actually made me intrigued by math an science which I normally hate. Great and fun read. ( )

Great fantasy novel. As L'Engle takes you on a journey to faraway planets via tesseracts with Ms. Which, Ms. Who, and Ms. Whatsit, good and evil forces are vying for power with just enough mystery to keep the reader guessing. L'Engle pushes back against the idea of a utopian society with detailed pictures of life on Camazotz. As the main characters drop down into the dark planet, the reader is given a feeling of being in a land you don't ever want to go back to. There is something terribly wrong with the sense of peace on Camazotz. The people dwell in a flawed utopian society, devoid of thought. Family dynamics, love, and a little touch of sci fi fantasy make for a good nighttime read! ( )

"The tesseract--" Mrs. Murry whispered. "What did she mean? How could she have known?" [p.27]
Well, the fifth dimension's a tesseract...In other words, to put it into Euclid, or old-fashioned plane geometry, a straight line is not the shortest distance between two points. [p.75]
“Maybe I don’t like being different,” Meg said. “but I don’t want to be like everybody else, either.”
“You mean you’re comparing our lives to a sonnet? A strict form, but freedom within it?”

“Yes.” Mrs. Whatsit said. “You’re given the form, but you have to write the sonnet yourself. What you say is completely up to you.”
The middle beast, a tremor of trepidation in his words, said "You aren't from a dark planet, are you?"
