Baggot guides the reader on an interesting journey trying to discover reality, from ancient philosophy up through quantum physics. Although, he does a really good job of describing the issues in laymen terms, the nature of the topics can be a bit hard to follow. It might be a bit of a stretch to claim this as a "Beginner's Guide." Really makes you think - just as a book should! I was fascinated and impressed by the way the author is able to bring together many strings in thinking about what "reality" is. And the book is utterly readable. The book circles around two aspects: that reality has a social and a physical aspect. In the first part of the book, Baggott describes the social dimension of thinking about reality; he takes much from Baudrillard and John Searle. (As I said, the book is not original, except in its bringing together different strands of ideas.) In the second part, Baggott describes how philosophers from the ancient Greeks until the present day have thought about what constitutes reality and how we are able to know it. Here the author describes the ideas of Plato, Descartes, Putnam and Nozick. In the third part, Baggott describes the physics of reality, especially quantum mechanics. In the first and second parts; if you're not a philosopher, these two parts can be considered as introductions into philosophy (or rather metaphysics). Baggott describes philosophical ideas in simple terms and uses concrete examples to make his point. The third part for me was the most boring. Baggott tries to describe the weirdness of the quantum level. He may do a good job in describing quantum mechanics, but there are books and movies on the subject that do a better job. In the conclusion of the book after having deconstructed the view that reality is independent, logically coherent and that science comes ever closer to the truth about reality, Baggott believes that although there is no justification for this position, scientific realism "is justiried because it is the most natural position - the default assumption - of most working scientists." (239) Yet, scientific realism can only be accepted as an "act of faith". I read this book and was thoroughly fascinated by it. If your a fan of the Matrix, this book goes into the philosophy underneath the movies and asks the question, Could it be that we are living in the Matrix? I believe it is possible that we are living in a Matrix, although there is a good chance we will never be able to know it, and this book confirms that conclusion using philosophical arguments. The book is easily readable, but I have read it as a prologue to further study in a truly fascinating subject. This book did what it was supposed to do, it made me think about the unthinkable... A Beginner's Guide to Reality is an introduction to philosophy for people who don't read philosophy. Jim Baggott's sources range from Aristotle to The Matrix. He examines the major developments in Western philosophical thought on the nature of reality, at each of three levels - social, perceptual and physical. (Do money, colour, or photons exist?) The book systematically investigates these levels, peeling away the assumptions we make about those parts of reality that we take for granted. No library descriptions found. |
