Exorcisten af William Peter Blatty (1971)

Legionen af William Peter Blatty (JonTheTerrible)
JonTheTerrible: I quite enjoyed the characters in The Exorcist and felt that Legion gives you a bit more of the enjoyable Kinderman as well as the darkness of the demon. While Legion is not nearly as good as its predecessor it is still an essential read if you enjoyed the mood and pace of The Exorcist.… (mere)

The book scared me just as much as the movie did! I enjoyed the book quite a bit and would love to read more books by Blatty. ( )

Excellent horror, classic

This book….sigh. It is truly the single most wonderfully written horror book I’ve ever read. This is my epitome when it comes to this genera. It’s the 3rd time I’ve read it and I just appreciate it more each time I journey through the insanity and despair of the household which this takes place. If you for some crazy reason not read this yet, please just do it and forgive yourself later for waiting so long ( )

Re-read 2023:
This time I took care to approach this book on its own, rather than mentally comparing to the movie and looking specifically for the fun horror elements. I was much more interested in the Father Karras story, of a priest who had lost his faith after the years of seeing the worst and weakest of mankind and longing for a material sign of god's existence and love, who carried the guilt of being unable to help others, even the mother left behind in squalor and isolation.

Upgraded the rating to 5 stars.

Original from 2013:
I came to this first by way of the movie, which is one of the few horror movies which has consistently scared the living shit out of me from childhood through adulthood. Even now, with dated and transparent special effects, having seen it a bazillion times, it has the power to make me uneasy unless all the lights in the house are left blazing and the radio on top volume for a few hours afterwards. Loving horror novels as I do, I approached the audiobook with all the gleeful anticipation of a gorgeously gross-out scare-fest. I confess myself disappointed.

The story has power, and Mr. Blatty brings a wonderfully evocative, gravelly voice to the audiobook narration, but my God the storyline drags in places. The build up is so painfully slow that if I didn't know what was coming I might have abandoned. Once the possession is in high gear, though, the story clips right along. It's hard to rate the scare-factor, given my history with the movie and familiarity with the story-line, but the second half of this relatively short book makes up for slogging through the first half. The Exorcist most definitely does not qualify as A Book That Scares You. The movie might (or it just might gross me out). I've never wanted to see it; after reading the book I want to see it less.

I have to admire whoever read this book and saw a blockbuster movie in it. The writing is truly awful. Choppy and at times incoherent. The plot is strictly dime-store novel. And there's a detective who reads like a poor spoof of Columbo. The Exorcist is a cultural relic best left in the past. ( )

Like the brief doomed flare of exploding suns that registers dimly on blind men's eyes, the beginning of the horror passed almost unnoticed; in the shriek of what followed, in fact, was forgotten and perhaps not connected to the horror at all.
