This was such a clever little book! I really enjoyed reading it! I remember, when I was younger, I had watched the movie The Secret of NIMH, but I could hardly remember what it was about. After reading this I am going to have to go back and see the similarities between the two stories. As I read the book, I love the conflicts that occurred in the story and I loved reading the history of the rats who escaped from NIMH (the National Institute of Mental Health) where they escaped from the humans. It was great and I was glad to know how they had a connection with Mrs. Frisby as well. I highly recommend this book to everyone of all ages. Mrs. Frisby is such a strong character and I love how she is willing to do anything for her children. She is an inspiration. ( )

A really solid book. Mrs. Frisby is a very interesting children's book protagonist, since usually the mom is dead or to be avoided, not the main character. I really love her worried and practical, but still inquisitive, perspective.

The action of the book is actually relatively simple -- it all boils down to moving a cinderblock a few feet -- but the premise has a lot of inventiveness. The ethical/moral debate between Nicodemus and Jenner is interesting, but not pressed on too much. I prefer it to the wise quasi-magician vs evil villain of Don Bluth's movie, though it is to be said that the weird vibes of that adaptation are to be admired.

Anyway, time to discuss the naming conventions of rodents lol. The NIMH rat names we get are Nicodemus, Justin, Jenner, and Arthur. The NIMH mouse names we get are Jonathan Frisby and Mr Ages (no first name given). The rats Brutus and Isabella, and mice Martin Frisby, Theresa Frisby, Timothy Frisby, and Cynthia Frisby are second-generation. The cat Dragon and the canary Porgy are named by their owners. The owl in the forest has no name. The shrew is just called Auntie Shrew. Mrs. Frisby's first name is never given. What kills me here is Jeremy the crow. If it weren't for him, we could assume that the NIMH-enhanced rats and mice all named themselves and their children, and moreover that there were different naming conventions between the two species (single-name vs double-name), but that the other creatures of the world have no capacity or inclination to name themselves-- including Mrs Frisby! She goes only by Mrs. Jonathan Frisby. It would all be so perfect... ah well. ( )

A brilliant story which I only now found the opportunity to enjoy. Striking similarity to the film for the first half of the story, but major changes to the climactic ending which greatly alters what the story is about. Lovely read! ( )

I read this book as a kid and I absolutely loved it! I can't wait to reread it with my children. ( )

I’m ride-or-die for the movie adaptation but the book is great too. I kinda like that there’s no real antagonist, just obstacles that the characters have to think their way through. ( )
