Randomly pulled it off the shelf at the library - a fun book! Some stuff I did know, lots I didn't. The Polish priest who invented the bullet proof vest - very interesting. ( )

I feel I must apologize for this review, but it, like Beyer’s books, is unique. This one includes 100 little known facts about various presidents, their lives and attitudes. It makes the third member of this set that I’ve read.

I very much delayed review of any them. I’d rate them poorly as works of history, but found all of them to be very readable. The history is poor because the facts usually aren’t that important, and the style doesn’t aid in understanding. On the other hand, I am compelled to report that I thoroughly enjoyed them all. Each of the 100 two page articles is readable and enjoyable. Set this book where you have short times of waiting, and if you like history, it will keep you amused during those times. ( )

Cute book, quick read, nothing outstanding but of interest to people who enjoy trivia. ( )

Some fun trivia about the U.S. Presidents. Did you know Lincoln was challenged to a duel? His weapon of choice - calvary broadswords. A truce was negotiated. Or that Grant is the only president to ever receive a speeding ticket while in office for making his horces pull his carriage at gallop speed? It's all in here. Oddly, a few tidbits are thrown in about other nation's presidents, like Santa Anna. Overall, a fun little book, just don't epect to come out with any deep thoughts about the Presidency or American history on this one. ( )

I wasn't sure there would be much in this book that was new to me, since I'm a history buff and have read a *lot* of books of anecdotes. I got a pleasant surprise; nearly all the stories were unfamiliar to me, and even when I knew the story (e.g., the origin of the Teddy bear), there would be interesting details I hadn't known. Unlike many similar books, it is thoroughly sourced, so you can comfortably believe that Teddy Roosevelt was the superhero of Presidents — doing everything from inviting the first African-American to dine at the White House, to saving college football — though even he couldn't push through (or thru) spelling reform. Perhaps most important, the book is entertaining and fun to read. ( )
