I threw the piece of paper on the fire. She saw it burn . . . Orphaned at an early age, Philip Ashley is raised by his benevolent older cousin, Ambrose. Resolutely single, Ambrose delights in Philip as his heir, a man who will love his grand home as much as he does himself. But the cosy world the two construct is shattered when Ambrose sets off on a trip to Florence. There he falls in love and marries - and there he dies suddenly. In almost no time at all, the new widow - Philip's cousin Rachel - turns up in England. Despite himself, Philip is drawn to this beautiful, sophisticated, mysterious woman like a moth to the flame. And yet . . . might she have had a hand in Ambrose's death?… (mere)

I really enjoyed My cousin Rachel. Intrigues, love, murder, mistrust and deceit among the landed gentry in Cornwall in the 19th century. My only criticism is that it would have done the book good if she had cut 50 - 100 pages. The landscape descriptions and the superficial small talk among the characters were often a bit long, and that interfered with the suspense of the story a bit sometimes.
All in all, it was a nice, atmospheric and suspenseful story - exactly what I like and expect of Daphne du Maurier! ( )

I'd read du Maurier's Rebecca decades ago, but had never gotten around to reading My Cousin Rachel until now. I'm barely past the first chapter and already the novel is warning us that we're in for a depressing read.

Series Info/Source: This is a stand alone book that I borrowed from the library.

Story (3/5): This was okay, I liked the gothic atmosphere of the book. However, I am not a fan of books that build up a big mystery and then leave it completely open ended; I feel like it's kind of lazy. I do realize a lot of people enjoy all the discussion that comes with a book like this and enjoy speculating about what the open ending might mean...I am not one of them.

Characters (3/5): The characters are complex and intriguing, however none of them are very likable or enjoyable to read about. They don’t really grow throughout the story but are all fairly selfish and predictable. I prefer to be engaged with my characters and enjoy reading about them, so this wasn’t a great match for me.

Setting (3/5): This is set in the English countryside during Victorian times (I think?). The setting was fine and matched the story well. I loved the description of Ambrose’s estate but the setting wasn’t a huge influence on the story.

Writing Style (3/5): This was decently written and the first half of the book was fairly engaging. However, the writing is very flowery and elaborate (reflecting the time it was written in) and it's a bit of a slog to read. As mentioned above I don’t love open ended stories and I felt like this book was a lot of effort to read and I didn’t get much from it.

My Summary (3/5): Overall I finished this book but it really wasn't for me. It has aged well and parts of the story are still entertaining. It was just a lot of work to read and I found the resolution completely unsatisfying...not to mention somewhat predictable. I won't be reading any more books by du Maurier. I can see why Jane Austen fans would love her as an author but she is not for me. ( )

This author is amazing with the mystery. She delivers it in a slow burn that leaves you wanting to know more even at the end. Sometimes historical fiction doesn't keep my attention, but this did completely. ( )

This leans more on a 3.5 but du Maurier's hauntingly ambiguous My Cousin Rachel is a poisonous food for thought. With biting Oedipal implications, young heir Philip's initial hatred of Ambrose's widow (both of which his cousins), Rachel Ashley, turns slow burningly into a feverish, violent, and obsessive infatuation. ** "How simple it must be for a woman of the world, like Mrs Ashley, to twist a young man like yourself around her finger." Philip is very naïve then develops into an annoying lad until he becomes some kind of villain depending on one's perception. And what's more to make this all complicated than the inclusion of money and assets to the matter, Ambrose's suspicious death and letters, and Philip's disturbing likeness with Ambrose?

A book difficult to put down with its aggravating ambiance of paranoia and suspense as the plot twists and turns itself all made horrifically charming by the seemingly gold digging, ambivalent, and subduedly promiscuous cousin Rachel until she's just Rachel, my own inability to completely decide who to believe and trust is (magnificently) concerning and (positively) frustrating. du Maurier has gone as far as making a subtle commentary on women's dependency on men most particularly in financial matters and it works brilliantly in this narrative of deceit, doubts, and distractions. My Cousin Rachel is a coup of reverse psychology and scepticism. As soon as you close the book with a gasping thud, the story has just started in your head. ( )
