I am aghast at the extraordinarily high ratings for this book. Author Raina Telgemeier recounts her childhood trauma of having two teeth displaced and her subsequent 4 1/2 year nightmare of orthodontia in graphic form and detail. While some of the themes are cildish, this is not for young readers at all; it may frighten kids from orthodontistry, there are lots of mean girls, even the author was mean to a 6th grader who liked her when no other boys did. It sounds like the author was pretty miserable when she was 12-15. Here's the moral in about three lines: "I realized I had been letting the way I looked on the outside affect how I felt on the inside. But the more I focused on my interests, the more it brought out things I liked about myself. And that affected the way other people saw me!" ( )

To the hundreds of kids in my library system who have asked me for this book so sweetly, excitedly, and repeatedly that I finally decided I had to read it: Thank you! Smile is wonderful, and I'm so glad that Raina Telgemeier remembered her own painful (yes, emotionally, but also physically, given the terrible dental torture that ensued after she knocked out her front teeth in sixth grade!) middle school years well enough that you can read her book and know that she "gets" you. For the grown-ups here: Smile isn't just some sappy kid's story. It's funny, charming, and insightful, with fabulous artwork, and a genuinely engaging story--a perfect example of why graphic novels and their authors and illustrators deserve a lot more respect and attention than many adults give them. A cute story that has aged with grace. While I can't relate much to the characters anymore now that I'm older, it is still a pleasant and quick read. ( )

Worth it?) Eh.

I came to this book because I really enjoyed another one of Telgemeier's books, Drama. So I'm already associated with her style of writing; clearly, it's child-orientated. And I've known for a while that this book is pretty much the be-all, end-all of middle school library graphic novel sections everywhere, so I figured that I had to get to it at one point or another. My reaction? Well, eh.

One of the reasons that I liked Drama is that it had believable conflict. Nothing insane or thought provoking, but just enough for a first-time graphic novel reader. This...kind of didn't. I mean, yeah, you can argue that the braces cause the most conflict, and you'd be right, but the story splits so much between them and the main character's fights with friends and puberty and first love and so, so much that you never really focus too long on one issue before catapulting into the next.

But what do I know? I had Invisalign. ( )

An autobiographical graphic novel about the author’s experiences after severely injuring her two front teeth. This is the same author of some of “The Babysitter’s Club” graphic novels.
