First published in 1929, Passing is a remarkable exploration of the shifting racial and sexual boundaries in America. Larsen, a premier writer of the Harlem Renaissance, captures the rewards and dangers faced by two negro women who pass for white in a deeply segregated world.

Wonderful read! Why are students reading The Scarlet Letter instead of Passing!? ( )

At once subtle and devastating, this masterpiece of the Harlem Renaissance is a novel of manners that shows the psychic and social consequence of the valorization and privileging of whiteness. Very highly recommended.

It is not clear how Clare died. She might have fallen or been pushed by Irene. The possibility of it being the latter is astounding. What lies in human hearts? Can jealousy cause someone to kill? (Irene had thought that something was going on between her husband and Clare.) ( )

I was not expecting the level of melodrama that would be on-hand. Larsen writes in a very unique voice--I wouldn't be surprised to find out she was a middle-class gossip with some forward thinking political views. That take helps to give some intriguing descriptions to the characters and their motivations.

But that's all there is. This story basically boils down to a woman feeling conflicting emotions (mainly love and hate) over someone who has insinuated herself into her life. It's like listening to a bipolar gadfly rant on the telephone. There isn't much of a plot, which becomes painfully obvious as the story goes on. Additionally, some of the sentences are written in a very clunky way--going on with multiple commas when brevity would've been key. And don't get me started on the ending.

Still, it has some positives going on for it. As a time capsule it's cool to learn some new slang and to find out how people wrestled with race, class, and romance in the 1920's. Those, along with the fairly lean length, gives it enough for a marginal recommendation. Especially for those with an interest in the topic. ( )

The characters here were multi-layered and complex, as was the subject matter. This book contains elements of literary fiction, thriller, and romance. It was a fascinating meditation on race, belonging, jealousy, and female friendship. ( )
