Tigana is the internationally celebrated epic of a beleaguered country struggling to be free. It is the tale of a people so cursed by the dark sorceries of the tyrant king Brandin that even the very name of their once beautiful home cannot be spoken or remembered. But, years after their homeland's devastation, a handful of men and women set in motion a dangerous crusade--to overthrow their conquerors and bring back to the world the lost brightness of an obliterated name: Tigana. Against the magnificently realized backdrop of a world both sensuous and brutal, this masterful novel of a passionate people pursuing their dream is breathtaking in its vision, and changes forever the boundaries of fantasy fiction.  … (mere)

This is my favorite Kay novel, and near my top favorite fantasy novel of all time. Heartrending themes of memory, naming, love, and loyalty. ( )

This author always sweeps me away. In this book we enter a world with 2 moons and a Triad of god/goddesses. The culture and politics reflect ancient Italy. The story takes place on The Peninsula of The Palm. Two competing sorcerer's have invaded and split the Peninsula in two. During the war a son of a sorcerer was killed. In punishment for his loss, the sorcerer placed a terrible curse on the people and land where he died. 20 years later a troop of unlikely comrades gather their forgotten people and lay a plan to bring back their home. It is a beautiful story of loss and identity.

Guy Gavriel Kay - Tigana: Repetitions aside (he forgot what he wrote a few pages back??), this fantasy does a grand job getting at the heart of good vs. evil and the lessons of the past. #cursorybookreviews #cursoryreviews ( )

Nope. I tried. I really tried to get through this, but I had to invoke my 10% rule. If you can't grab me in the first 10%, then the other 90% just isn't going to go well for either of us.

When I bought the book at an event where the author was speaking, several people mentioned it was one of their favourite books, one even stating she'd read it several times.

All I got was a whole lot of talking, a lot of leading up to events...only to have them quickly summarized afterward instead of going through them. And scads and scads of that long-winded fantasy narrative that drives me nuts.

It's too bad, because I read and loved Kay's Fionavar Tapestry.

But this? Nope. ( )

I enjoyed this one, but it is not my favorite GGK book. I did like the setting and the characters. ( )
