Regarded by many critics and fans alike as one of Arthur Machen's finest works, the novel The Secret Glory is a retelling of a story that fascinated the author throughout his lifetime: the quest for the Holy Grail. The quest is carried out by the unlikeliest of heroes: a young orphan who is regarded as a worthless layabout by everyone around him.

This is unlike Machen's other books and, as a result, I found it less accessible. Instead of horror, the book features a semi-autobiological tale about a boy's struggle through the public school system. In this, it is similar, to a certain extent, to "The Hill of Dreams."

What I found most interesting was elements of the Holy Grail that Machen weaves throughout the story. The main character saw it when he was younger, with his father, and is peroccupied by it and the sense of magic it holds throughout his life.

All told, a difficult, but rewarding read, and a must for all fans of Machen ( )

The Tartarus Press editions of 1998 (isbn 1872621368) and 2015 (isbn 9781905784718) contain six chapters. All earlier editions end after chapter four, the last two chapters having been suppressed by Machen but left amongst his papers.
