""Te riri Pakeha" describes, for the first time in a single work, the disturbing story of the alienation of Maori land. During the last 150 years, Maori landholdings have been reduced to less than five percent of what they were when the treaty of Waitangi guaranteed Maori owners in full possession the protection of the Crown in 1840. By the power of the gun and the machinations of the law, the promises made in the Treaty have been mocked and dishonoured. From the first impact of James Cook to contemporary events such as Bastion Point, Maori society has struggled to come to terms with a Pakeha community which is rapacious for land and which has refused to accept the realities of Aotearoa. In this struggle, the original inhabitants of the land have been all but overwhelmed, but they have fought back and survived. "Te riri Pakeha" provides an account of this tragic conflict ..." -- Back cover… (mere)
