Meg Powell and Carson McKay were raised side by side on their families' farms, bonded by a love that only deepened as they grew. Everyone in their small rural community in northern Florida thought that Meg and Carson would always be together. Seventeen years later, Meg's marriage has become routine, and she spends her time juggling the demands of her medical practice, the needs of her widowed father, and the whims of her rebellious teenage daughter, Savannah, who is confronting her burgeoning sexuality in a dangerous manner and pushing her mother away just when she needs her most. Meg and Carson grew up as neighbors and friends, but as teens their relationship grew into something more. But when Meg has the chance to save her family's farm from financial ruin, she leaves Carson behind to marry a banker who can resolve the family's debt. Fast forward 16 years. Carson is a famous musician, on the verge of his wedding date. Meg is still married, a doctor, with a teenage daughter. Her daughter becomes involved in an online romance. Meanwhile, Meg is diagnosed with a fatal disease. When Carson returns home to finalize wedding plans, Carson & Meg's paths cross again.

My description makes this story sound very sappy and Lifetime movie-ish. And yes, it is to a degree. I'm a little bit of a sucker for stories of reunited teenage love. But the writing was decent, which saves this from being over-the-edge sappy. A lot of it was predictable. Some of it was not. Not a deep read, but enjoyable enough as a quick interlude between the heavier stuff. ( )

Meg Powell and Carson McKay are neighbors who fall in love as teens, only to have Meg marry her boss Brian (who can forgive her father's overdue mortgage payments) after a wedding-eve last fling with Carson. About 17 years later, Meg is an obstetrician with an almost-16 daughter Savannah, and Carson is a successful musician about to be married to a woman nearly half his age. You can probably guess where some of this is going.

The story is told from the viewpoints of Meg, Carson, and Savannah. Savannah's I could do without, as she does some typical stupid-teen stuff, but it's necessary to the plot. The big part of the story is Meg's recent diagnosis of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), and her desire to admit her mistakes, leave something for her daughter, yet die the way she wants to go. That part did make me think.

WOW! This is a wonderful story about life, love and all things in between. Ms. Fowler - what a wonderful debut novel! I laughed and cried (most of the last 40 pages) but loved it. ( )

I'm not sure what I was thinking.  When the front flap said this was like a mix of Sparks and Picoult I should have just stopped.  But I did read the first few paragraphs, and the epilogue.  And, yes, that was plenty for me.  Otoh, I know some ppl will love this.  More power to them.

Whew, this book seriously pulls at the heart strings and makes you think. It's about trying to make responsible decisions and living with the choices you make, even if that means living with regret. And sometimes making amends with that regret. I couldn't put this book down, I devoured it! The ending was incredibly touching and had me in tears. ( )
