Summary of Book: This book is a children’s picture book about different animals. When the animals fall in the water and splash, they make their own distinctive noises when they get wet. For example, when a cow falls into the water, it says moo, splash, moo.
Personal Reaction: I think this book is a great children’s book. It has big, bold, and colorful illustrations of the animals falling in to the water. I think that big, bold and colorful illustrations are very important in children’s books. The children may not be able to read but because of the illustrations, they are still able to tell what’s going on in this book. The animals have expressions on their faces when falling into the water and by this you can tell if the animal is happy or unhappy. This book expresses easy repetition of animal sounds combined with playful and rhyming words to make this a perfect book for reading and laughing out loud. I personally thin this book is a great book to read aloud to young children because of the animal sound effects. (I read this to my son and he laughed at me making the sounds and loved looking at the pictures.)
Extension Ideas:
1. The students will have the choice of a color sheet of a pig, dog, cow, duck, cat, mouse, bee, or a frog. These were all the animals represented in Splash, Splash.
2. The students will get to participate in a show and tell day. They can bring an animal from home to show and tell. The parents will have to approve and be involved in this part and take the animal home afterwards. If the child does not have an animal to bring then they can bring their favorite stuffed animal and tell about it.
