This book is my bible! I keep it right next to my computer for quick reference. Perfect size and everything. I recommend it to everyone - not just writers! ( )

A bunch of narrow, useless and elitist prescriptions on what 'correct' use of English is. It is outdated, but even the tone is so obnoxious I had to take deep breaths before moving to the next elements. It felt like reading a grumpy old man's rants about changes in language and how things SHOULD be.
The only good part is the last chapter "An Approach to Style" which manages to provide decent advice.
I wouldn't recommend this book. ( )

This book is a classic in writing, although some of the information is dated. Some of the guidelines are useful, it seems, for the authors, but not for everyone. Finding a writing voice is difficult, but for each author, they must find their own voice, and the best way is simply writing. Ask yourself after you have written a passage, "if someone else handed this to me, would it fill my soul with warmth, or sap my energy at the pretentious voice." Of course, there are other flaws than pretentiousness, but writing is something to be enjoyed. If you enjoy yourself when writing, either your precious prose truly is beautiful, or it delights you only because of its cleverness. There is little middle ground.

This book is concise and a good starting point for those who have never written before, or for the experienced writer who finds his work flagging. It is less useful for those in between the extremes. ( )

Buy it, study it, enjoy it. It's as timeless as a book can be in our age of volubility. (previous edition)

...still a little book, small enough and important enough to carry in your pocket, as I carry mine.

The Elements of Style does not deserve the enormous esteem in which it is held by American college graduates. Its advice ranges from limp platitudes to inconsistent nonsense. Its enormous influence has not improved American students' grasp of English grammar; it has significantly degraded it.

"The Elements of Forbidden" about 5 copies of which are buried in this work, are due to a since-corrected LibraryThing error, and are really also 'Style' works
This is the edition of The Elements of Style that was written by William Strunk and later expanded upon by E.B. White.  Please do not combine with the original, unexpanded version by Strunk alone, nor with the illustrated edition.
