Excellent description of the whole process of pregnancy. Very straightforward (which is, of course, why it's on the banned books list). Starts at four weeks and goes through delivery.

MY MOM'S HAVING A BABY by Dori Hillestad Butler is a story that informs readers on what it is like to have a person get pregnant. It starts out by explaining how the mom got pregnant. It explains that when a mom and day love each other very much they get close and hug. After that it explains the stages of the babies growth. How at four weeks the baby is the size of a front tooth, but it still has a beating heart and a spine and a head. It goes through the stages over the nine months of pregnancy. The illustrations in the book are drawn in pen and colored in paint. The words on each page make the reader look left to right, but they are all over the page which makes it a surprise for the reader on each page. This would be a good book to read to children to explain how they were born. It is also a good book to explain to children if they are expecting a sibling. ( )

Characters: Mother and daughter

Setting: The setting takes place at the home, the park, and the doctor.

Theme: Learning about where kids come from and about birth

Genre: Learning education

Summary: This book introduces children to childbirth and accepting a new sibling into his or her life. The book also explains the process of giving birth and how kids are born. It goes from the talking about the evolving belly of the mother and the processes of going to the doctor and giving birth.

Audience: To parents who have trouble talking to their kids about having another brother or sister. It also helps kids who are learning about their new brother or sister in their family.
Curriculum ties: Ties to early development and learning about development.

Personal response: Introducing a new member into the family can be a difficult process for the parent as well as the child. This book has images that are very detailed in describing all of the things that the mother goes through in having the child. It starts with the stomach evolving and the process of going to the doctor. It also takes into perspective of what the baby needs to survive in the mother’s womb. I think this book does a fantastic job and giving the parent and the child useful information with the reinforcement of images to help them learn about a baby in the womb and presenting a new concept to the child.
