The "original, first-rate, serious, and beautiful" short fiction (New York Times Book Review) that introduced J. D. Salinger to American readers in the years after World War II, including "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" and the first appearance of Salinger's fictional Glass family. Nine exceptional stories from one of the great literary voices of the twentieth century. Witty, urbane, and frequently affecting, Nine Stories sits alongside Salinger's very best work--a treasure that will passed down for many generations to come. Really, Salinger is an amazing short story writer. I wish there weren't so many of his stories scattered around, I would really love a complete collection. Here's some individual ratings for the stories:

A Perfect Day for Bananafish: 4/5 (I would rate the first half higher than the second)

Uncle Wiggly in Connecticut: 5/5. I think this one might be my favorite. It's so complete.

Just Before the War With the Eskimos: 3/5

The Laughing Man: 2/5

Down at the Dinghy: 3/5

For Esme-- With Love and Squalor: 5/5. Heartwarming and beautiful.

Pretty Mouth and Green My Eyes: 5/5. This one is also excellent. It could be an amazing short film too. I love it. (The girl was Joanie, right? Must have been.)

De Daumier-Smith's Blue Period: 4/5. Like in Catcher in the Rye, Salinger really shows a thing for writing loathsome or groan-inducing but pitiable characters. I think he must resent very much that type of person, I can't help but think the only way you can be this vicious at a particular type of people is if you happened to be one yourself. In any case, it's really good.

Teddy: 3/5. It's good but it feels he's done it before and better. Like a rehash of Franny's whole thing in Franny and Zooey. I liked how he did it more there.

Continuing my short story kick, i decided to read (or re-read, i honestly can't remember) J.D. Salinger's "Nine Stories", aptly titled for the nine short stories contained within. There is one thing that unifes all the stories, abrupt and possibly distrubing endings. Salinger spends pages and pages filling out the lives and realities of these exceedingly interesting characters and then yanks the hand brake on the train and derails the story in usually one or two sentences. The white space left on the page is tantamount to taunting the reader, showing that more could have been said, more could have been explained, but Salinger really didn't feel it was necessary. My personal favorites out of the bunch are "For Esme - with Love and Squalor" and "Teddy". I'm not sure what makes these two stories stand out for me, but one of their common traits is that they both star or co-star extemely intelligent or overly mature children. Salinger creates these pre-adults with such ease that it's hard to decide whether they are adorable or creepy, possibly both. I would certainly recommend this to someone looking to take a break, crank in a whole story in a short amount of time and just randomly work your way through a solid series of stories. ( )

I didn't hate it, but it mostly didn't do anything for me. "Blue Period" and "Esmé" are maybe the two standouts in the bunch. ( )

Well-written, but too slice-of-life for my taste in short stories. ( )

Non-U.S. editions of J.D. Salinger's short story collection Nine Stories are titled For Esmé - with Love and Squalor, and Other Stories. "For Esmé – with Love and Squalor" is also the title of a single Salinger short story from Nine Stories.
