Why is life never like it is in books? Nothing interesting ever happens to me. I am not adopted, my parents are not alcoholics or drug addicts, and I don't live on a council estate. Even my name sucks. In other words, my life is earth-shatteringly normal. This cannot go on. Something deep and life-changing has to happen . . . and sometime about now would be good.Join Rachel as she sets out to make her life more interesting, befriend exotic people, and win the heart of Justin Statham . . . all while channelling her own unique vintage Essex chic. Will she succeed in her quest for more tragedy in her life . . . or will it just be tragic.… (mere)

My so called life was one of the greatest books Ive ever read. I recived it with a magazine and read it almost as an after thought, But I have reread it at least 10 times after. The characters are teens a littlie older than me, I really felt like they could have been real people. The story was hilarious and wild but not enough to make it seem unrealistic. The way the author described it really made it seem real. The story had enough adventure, comedy and romance to make it a good read for anyone. Although there is a small amount of swearing it just adds to the realisim of this book. I feel I could truely connect with its characters. Over all I would give this book a five out of five in my opinion it is one of the best books of all time. ( )

Rachel writes a humourous diary about friendship and failed romance and her wacky family. There are her two best friends 1)Scarlet ( her parents are sex therapists & the girl knows way too much about THAT part of life) and 2)Sad Ed (secretly in love with Rachel - she has no idea- she thinks he is gay!)and then tnere are the try-hards Fat & Thin Kylie (fighting over the same boy and giving Poor White Trash a bad name! One even wins Lotto!)There is one grandfather who sleeps with his aged carer and makes her pregnant and other grandparents who keep getting lost! Then there are the aunt and uncle who are mega religious, and the dog that eats everything not to mention the baby brother who acts like he is 30! A wierd book in that you do have to know some of the British references but most is ok. It is set in 2004- 2005 because it talks about the Thailand Tsunami, Hurrican Katrina & the London Bombing! One for older students as there are a lot of sex references!

...although 13-year-old Rachel's doomy account of the non-events in her sensible, middle-class family in Saffron Walden reads like a homage to Sue Townsend, it is quite funny enough to be considered a worthy successor for our age.
