Summary: This is a story about David McPhail as a writer and illustrator. It explains his inspirations and how he comes to create what he creates. He explains that some things are easier for him than others and one process can take many different turns of events. It is great at explaining the different ways he draws and paints his illustrations and that whole process.

Genre: This is an autobiography because it is a book about the author it is by. Therefore the story is written by the same person it is about and it is his take on his writing and illustrating career.

Characterization: The only character in this book is David McPhail himself. He is a round character because it shows how he develops his art. He seems to be somewhat of a perfectionist and he tries really hard to get everything in his stories just the way he wants them. He seems like he really loves his characters and takes on some of the responsibility for them. Even the stories he has not published he feels deeply connected to.

This book can motivate young writers to focus on how illustrations enhance and tell a substantial part of a story. The author explains the process of writing a children's book, and he describes his creative strategies for writing.
