You can never go wrong with a Lisa Wingate novel; A Thousand Voices did not disappoint.

A lovely, sing-song feeling story of Dell, a young half-Choctaw woman trying to sift through her past while not disturbing her present. Rich with tidbits of Choctaw history, A Thousand Voices finds Dell searching for her birth father in secret so as not to hurt her adoptive white parents. When Dell meets the Reed family over the Labor Day Choctaw pow wow, she is filled with a new sense of belonging as she learns about her heritage as she instills some lessons of her own to her new friends.

A very easy flow to the book that will keep you wanting to turn the page. I’m always so impressed at the easy flow of dialogue in a Lisa Wingate book and A Thousand Voices left me smiling at its reality.

A very good book. ( )

Another great book by Lisa Wingste! I loved the main character and found myself unable to put the book down until I found out what was going to happen.
Dell was adopted at 13 and taken away from poverty and neglect. She was encouraged to pursue her musical talent. When she turns 20 she is given an opportunity of the lifetime; traveling with a symphony in the Ukraine and earning a Juilliard scholarship. She is haunted by her past and decides to go to Oklahoma secretly to find answers. She finds answers to her questions from the Choctow Nation people. She soon finds herself in love with the music of her heritage. She also feels drawn to a native named Jace and his two children. She finds a clue at a craft fair, someone has painted her mother's likeness. At first the man denies that he's her father but the truth comes out
He was a drug dealer and he wanted to protect Dell and her mother. He'd put his brother's name on her birth certificate because he didn't think he'd live past 25. She makes amends with him and then drives away. ( )

I hadn't read any of the previous books in this series, but I like this author's more recent books and was glad to see a novel of hers in my library that I hadn't read. It was interesting to read about the Choctaw nation and their big gathering. I think I was a bit disappointed that the romance didn't go on for Jace and Dell, but I can understand his point of view. "A Thousand Voices" was my least favourite novel in the "Tending Roses" series. I had high hopes for Dell's story but by the end I felt very disappointed. While I enjoyed Jace's family and learning about the culture and customs of the Choctaw Indians, I didn't feel connected to the characters nor was I emotionally involved in their lives.

For me, "A Thousand Voices" lacked the wisdom, warmth and beauty of the other books. While I could happily go back and reread the other four books in the future, I wouldn't bother with this one again. ( )

A girl-turned woman struggles with rejection and belonging as she seeks to know her real father, after being adopted. Not wanting to hurt her adopted parents, she travels to where her life began, hoping to find answers and prove that she is ready to know them. Unexplained memories haunt her until she confronts them. Twists in the path bring emotions that she thought that she had locked away, not to be shown.

Helpful in dealing with my own son's questions as he grows, accepted, adopted and loved by us, but unwanted by his own. Thank you.
