Everything I will say about this book has been said. It is brilliant, hilarious, and oh so bitter. I cannot imagine anyone who has had the misfortune to dwell in the land of fundamentalist cults, regardless of their specific source material, will not either unreservedly love or hate this book. As for me, I was raised in a secular Jewish home but against all my early teachings, like Shalom Auslander, I believe in God, and like Shalom Auslander, its a problem for me and I loved every moment of this read.

By happenstance I read this while the overall rate of Covid was going down in NYC but going up in my neighborhood and a few others with large Orthodox populations because many of the Orthodox Jews refuse to wear masks (a Lubavitch group held a mask burning last week, which is ironic given the Nazi imagery.) It was auspicious timing, and provided hours of bitter cackling for me.

Despite hundred of great lines, my favorite (mentioned in my progress comments) is still: "There are roughly 50 million sperms in every ejaculate; that's about nine Holocausts in every wank. I was just hitting puberty when they told me this. or puberty was just hitting me, and I was committing genocide, on average, there or four times a day." ( )

Hilarious and memorable memoir of growing up in a highly dysfunctional Orthodox Jewish family in America. The author seems to continuously want to escape his religion, yet doesn't ever seem successful at it. ( )

FORESKIN'S LAMENT has been on my shelf for ten years. I think I started it once and put it down. Almost did the same this time, but I got through it. Filled with dark, bitter humor about family and the Jewish faith, it comes across as a kind of "Portnoy light," except I remember laughing a lot when I read Roths's book. Not so this one, but it's certainly wince-worthy. Sorry, Mr Auslander. You're a good writer, but your story is just too angry, or sad, or both. I was glad to get to the end of it.

FUNNY! the author read the audio version with such dry wit - god, it was funny! ( )

While I far prefer his short stories in Beware of God, this book still contained some brilliant writing. And enough horror stories to significantly up my anxiety over ever putting Jefferson in Sunday School or Vacation Bible School. I want to send Shalom (who acknowledges my sister at the end of the book) a copy of Love Poems from God, particularly the poem that asks why the men and women of this world keep drawing in their coloring books pictures of a God that makes them sad.
