This is a review I wrote in 2007:

**Delightful, sweet, funny and dreamy.... Anne of Green Gables**

I first read Anne of Green Gables when I was 8... I loved it then and still love it now (some years later). It's an all time classic, heartwarming story, with everlasting appeal for age 8s to adults. First published in 1908, it's every bit as readable now as I'm sure it was 100 years ago.

Naughty, dreamy, emotional Anne is a wonderful role model - with her fiery temperament and endless chatter, she can sometimes be a nuisance, but her adoptive parents, Marilla and Matthew, wouldn't have her any other way. She's bright, hard-working, caring and sociable and they soon find it hard to remember ever being without her.

Marilla and Matthew originally applied for a "boy" from the orphanage to help with work on their farm in idyllic Avonlea (Canada), but when Anne turns up lost and lonely, and immediately falls in love with Green Gables, they find they haven't the heart to send her away. Follow Anne's story from her arrival, age 11, to when she's 17 and leaving college, and then be sure to follow on with the rest of the "Anne" books - they're all delightful, and I can't recommend them enough! I first read this book when I was 11 and now I’ve reread it at 31. Twenty years later and this story is as beautiful as ever. I love how sentimental it is and I adore all of the characters. The setting is basically a character too. All the gorgeous descriptions of green gables and the haunted wood and the lake of shining waters and lovers lane; it all really added to the mood of the story.

Some things I didn’t notice back when I first read the book; there is a LOT of telling. A lot of events are told in the form of glossing, rather than a full scene of the events, or the events are told by a character (usually Anne) after the events have already taken place.
Because of this weird quirk, the pacing was a little off. A lot of time is covered in this book. Anne is 11 at the start of the book and nearly 17 at the end. The majority of the book is spent during years 11-13. Her later teen years went by in such a flash it was tough to keep up with. Entire years were covered in 2 pages or less.

I still give the book 5 stars because of all the intense emotions it gives me. Despite the quirky glossing style and the wonky pacing, this is a lovely story with riveting characters. ( )

Anne Shirley is a orphan girl mistakenly sent to the Cuthbert's farm on Prince Edward Island in Nova Scotia rather than the orphan boy they requested for help on their farm. Full of imagination and big, dramatic words, eleven year old Anne is kept by the Cuthbert's and raised through her 16th year this book. This was a charming and funny children's book and Anne was an engaging protagonist, prone to getting herself in trouble but just as likable as ever in spite of her mistakes and temper. Full of details that brought the countryside and inhabitants of the fictional Bolingbroke to life I found this to be a much more enjoyable than I expected for a children's book written over a hundred years ago.

At my wife's suggestion (she loved these books when she was young, and I had never read them), I read this aloud to the family. I liked it but didn't love it. Marilla comes around in the end, but I pretty quickly applied to her the nickname "crusty old shithead," which I don't suppose my wife will forgive me for any time soon. The main value to me of reading this book to the family, besides the intrinsic value of the activity and increased cultural literacy, is frankly that I like exposing my son to books traditionally considered "girl" books, and I like to do expose my daughter to things generally pigeonholed as "boy" books. I also like making them listen to things that require a little more focus to get through (compared to, say, Captain Underpants), and this fit the bill. I'm glad I read it but don't know that I'll go out of my way to read more books in the series. ( )

This is one of my all-time favorite books that I've read at least a dozen times throughout my life. It's also one of my comfort reads. ( )

Mrs. Rachel Lynde lived just where the Avonlea main road dipped down into a little hollow, fringed with alders and ladies' eardrops and traversed by a brook that had its source away back in the woods of the old Cuthbert place; it was reputed to be an intricate, headlong brook in its earlier course through those woods, with dark secrets of pool and cascade; but by the time it reached Lynde's Hollow it was a quiet well-conducted little stream, for not even a brook could run past Mrs. Rachel Lynde's door without due regard for decency and decorum; it probably was conscious that Mrs. Rachel was sitting at her window, keeping a sharp eye on everything that passed, from brooks and children up, and that if she noticed anything odd or out of place she would never rest until she had ferreted out the whys and wherefores thereof.

"Marilla, isn't it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet? … Oh, don't you see, Marilla? There must be a limit to the mistakes one person can make, and when I get to the end of them, then I'll be through with them. That's a very comforting thought."
"There's such a lot of different Annes in me. I sometimes think that is why I'm such a troublesome person. If I was just the one Anne it would be ever so much more comfortable, but then it wouldn't be half so interesting."
Marilla felt more embarrassed than ever. She had intended to teach Anne the childish classic, "Now I lay me down to sleep". But she had, as I have told you, the glimmerings of a sense of humor – which is simply another name for a sense of the fitness of things.
"Oh, but it's good to be alive and to be going home," breathed Anne.
But if the path set before her feet was to be narrow, she knew that flowers of quiet happiness would bloom along it.
