Eight friends explore the magic and history of HAlloween as they search for their ninth companion, Pipkin, in the company of he mysterious Mr Moundshroud. Bradbury takes readers along on a wild ride through history, from the depths of an Egyptian tomb to the high spires of Notre Dame cathedral, but he also touches on the darker aspects of the holiday. Moundshroud explains to the boys that Halloween is an event which changes for every age, but there is one resounding inspirational theme throughout - that of Death and its accompanying darkness. As the boys continue their Halloween education they begin to realize that their journey to find Pipkin may not be the fun hide-and-seek that it began as, and the question becomes why must they search in the first place and what is in it for Moundshroud? Wonderfully poetic story about the meaning of Halloween; with an unforgettable tour guide, Carapace Clavicle Moundshroud.
This book also happens to be a moving commentary on friendship, loyalty, and sacrifice. Loved every moment of it; only wish I had discovered it when I was the age of the boys in the book. 5 Stars.

In this little book for boys, a group of trick-or-treaters have an adventure, learning a bit about Halloween history as they set out to rescue their friend. Unfortunately, the history isn't well researched. Bradbury thinks Samhain was the Druid god of the dead; that's a common misunderstanding that's been knocked down. His history of "witches" in Europe is mixed up. My guess is that he wrote the story against a hard deadline. ( )

There is much to love about this story written by Ray Bradbury and illustrated by Joseph Mugnanini. From the contagious sense of adventure to the mysterious Mr. Moundshroud, the celebration of Samhain/All Hallows/Halloween/El Día de Los Muertes to the magical Halloween tree filled with jack-o-lanterns, and the charming illustrations, it is the perfect story for Halloween enthusiasts. Kids and adults will fall under its spell and will want to make reading it a yearly October tradition. ( )

Citater

Night came out from under each tree and spread. [3]
The tall man shut up his smile like a bright pocketknife. [21]
"The Undiscovered Country. Out there. Look long, look deep, make a feast. The Past, boys, the Past. Oh, it's dark, yes, and full of nightmare. Everything that Halloween ever was lies buried there. Will you dig for bones, boys? Do you have the stuff?" [32]
But in that instant of darkness, the night swept in. A great wing folded over the abyss. Many owls hooted. Many mice scampered and slithered in the shadows. A million tiny murders happened somewhere.

The clouds, like gauzy scenes, were pulled away to set a clean sky. The moon was there, a great eye. [38]
The scythe fell and lay in the grass like a lost smile. [45]
