I was on a Grace Livingston Hill kick a while back and read several of her novels. They are always quaint and old-fashioned, sometimes a little preachy, but almost always a nice relaxing read. ( )

There is just something about Grace Livingston Hill's stories that I find refreshing to read. Maybe it is the obvious good versus evil theme in her books.

This story was about Marion Warren, a lonely but brave young woman who has lost her father and the inheritance and is living on her own. She has a secret admirer and is becoming friends with a handsome young man, but there are always those who want to put you down and make you feel unworthy. But God is faithful and loving and kind and takes care of Marion in ways only He can. There is good in the world and Marion tries to see it in every aspect of her life and it was good to see how she reaches out to everyone, and tries to befriend them. I came away from reading this story uplifted and wanting to be more like the character Marion! ( )

Family interaction reveals the sweet character of Marion after her father's death, contrasted with the domineering brother Tom and the jealous sister-in-law Jennie. This is a typical GLH book with good and evil contrasted, and a good outcome for the faithful Marion. When she weds well, the home visit is almost hilarious. Hill is noted for the Christian and moral values in her books, usually set in the 1920's or so. ( )
