While I'm not typically a fan of magical realism, this lovely short novel has just the right amount that didn't seem distracting or ridiculous. Mama Elena definitely emerged as one of the all-time horrible mothers I've encountered in fiction. But Tita and her love for Pedro withstood even her mother's interference. The recipes sound nice but very labor-intensive, so I would have to find easier versions of the delicious sounding food to prepare in my own home. I positively recommend this wonderful classic. That was a wild ride. Filled with magical realism, the novel is framed around monthly recipes and stories. This book was my introduction to magical realism and uses surrealism and cooking to tell the story of a Mexican family. I enjoyed the act that recipes were included throughout the book and it helped my understand the importance of food in the culture, but overall, I did not feel connected to the characters and did not feel compelled to continue reading. I felt conflicted about this book, but at the end of the day, I liked it. It reads like a fairy tale with the fantasy elements woven in with homespun remedies. I didn't really have any investment in the main character's romance (actually I anti-shipped it), but I was interested in her other relationships: with her niece, sisters, mother, etc.. I also agree with other commenters that the adventures of her sister Gertrudis would have made a more interesting story. I think the framing device (that this is a family legend being passed down) does a good job of integrating the magical realism and recipe aspects of the book. Over all, enjoyable if it's your kind of thing (apparently it is mine). ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse

Earthy, magical, and utterly charming, this tale of family life in turn-of-the-century Mexico became a best-selling phenomenon with its winning blend of poignant romance and bittersweet wit. The classic love story takes place on the De la Garza ranch, as the tyrannical owner, Mama Elena, chops onions at the kitchen table in her final days of pregnancy. While still in her mother's womb, her daughter to be weeps so violently she causes an early labor, and little Tita slips out amid the spices and fixings for noodle soup. This early encounter with food soon becomes a way of life, and Tita grows up to be a master chef. She shares special points of her favorite preparations with listeners throughout the story.
