Really deeply enjoyed this; the feeling is definitely different from book one, where so much time is spent on setting up the story and world and introducing the characters and their magic. Here, it feels so much more fraught and tense but not in a way that is like off-putting, and I love the ways that you get to see more of the world (especially regarding the magic of the mentors.) It makes me love the characters so much more, as they feel more fleshed out and real, and I couldn't even wait and immediately dove into the next book, oops! ( )

I love this series, this was a perfect continuation of all the character's journeys. ( )

'Sandry's Book' ended with the four children having grown close metaphorically and literally after Sandry wove their magics together in order for them to survive a cave-in after an earthquake. Starting only weeks after this, 'Tris's Book' finds the Winding Circle defenseless against a pirate army.

Luckily that weaving of magics has made the four of them ridiculously powerful so the story has a hard time convincing me that they're ever in any real danger. Pierce gets points for having the characters caution themselves on power so quickly gained, but it still feels like too much too soon for the characters to stay rooted.

And you can't even call what Pierce did for the traitor foreshadowing, even in scare quotes. Obvious stick is obvious.

I know, I know, this is a kid's book.

The saving grace to the book is Tris, of course, her history is the one most kids would understand - that of a problem child, passed from relation to relation, institution to institution, with no hope. The fact that she so desperately didn't want her cousin, the only family she can know will accept her to be the traitor gave the story something to wrap around.

I'm enjoying these though, they're light and familiar - even if you haven't read them yet - without being too eye-rolly.

Maybe it's because there are 4 of them, but the main characters all fall somewhat flat. ( )

Tris is fat, unloved, and far too magically gifted for anyone's comfort. But the recent earthquakes (from [b:Sandry's Book|58889|Sandry's Book (Circle of Magic, #1)|Tamora Pierce|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1328860148s/58889.jpg|1142894]) have weakened the duchy's defenses, and Tris's half-controlled weather magic might be their last protection against a pirate fleet.

Everything about Tris is wonderfully specific and unique, from the way she prices every object she sees to her complicated feelings about her cousin. She's her own person, and discovering all her little nooks and crannies is really interesting. Even more so is the pirate invasion--Pierce writes battles and describes magic in the most exciting, engaging, completely enthralling way. This book was a huge improvement on the first book in the series, and it just gets better from here. ( )
