This basic and engaging theology of God, human relationships and service assists readers in reflecting more faithfully and more theologically on their own lives, particularly if they are involved in pastoral ministry or service projects.

Doing the Truth in Love is a short theological commentary on how our Covenant with Jesus urges us to serve our fellow people. Himes explains how our spirits can get the best benefit from our contributions to others. I enjoyed this book because there were many "hmmm, that makes sense--never thought about that" moments, as well as "WOW, I totally agree" moments. There were also a few things that I didn't agree with, but that's pretty standard for me. :) Each chapter also had a commentary by a collaborator (old students of Himes, mostly), explaining how Himes' theology applied to their own experiences in serving others.

This book is excellent for a student or casual reader of theology, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone who is simply interested in inspirational books—it is a bit too academic for light inspirational reading. ( )
