Four friends from a Mommy&Me group in Las Vegas, whose babies are already about to leave the nest and start college, decide to go to Bridger Hot Springs, Montana (based on Boulder Hot Springs, it seems) for a reunion. The reunion turns out to be a turning point for at least three of them, Maude, the elderly woman who works as a chef at the retreat, and the resident ghost Simone. There are two parallel timelines - the present day, which is the summer of 2022 - and a century ago when Simone lived. So, it's partly a historical fiction telling a story of farming, prohibition, bootlegging, and the red-light district of Butte, Montana. There is also a bit of murder mystery and magical realism, but mostly it's a tribute to women friendship. ( )

OMG, I didn't expect this book to keep me from doing anything else while I finished it! Sometimes as an early reviewer, you find you have to slog through a book that's only so-so but that is SO not the case here. Loved the characters, the setting, the story and the writing. And one of my all time favorite lines: "Shiny, red blood flowed off the concrete and into the soil. I hoped it wouldn’t ruin my garden." ( )

This is an interesting, though hard to categorize, book. It is a mystery in the sense there is a dead body. But it is not a detective story. Instead it is a study in personality, secrets, and friendship.
I found the first chapter hard to complete but after that I had a hard time putting the book down. The women are complex with issues that seem perfect for where they are in life. I was sorry the book ended where it did. I wanted to know more about how their lives unfolded.
As someone raised in Montana and familiar with the area, I truly enjoyed the book's descriptions of the places . The descriptions of Boulder were exactly how I imagine someone who came from a more populous area would describe it (though I cannot imagine one can really catch an Uber in Boulder).
Trigger warning: someone with a history of rape or domestic violence may find a couple of the scenes too well written to be comfortable.

Disclaimer: I received an early reviewer copy thanks to the author. ( )

There are two stories in this wonderful book. A modern day and a ghost story. I really liked the characters from both timelines. Four friends have a reunion in Montana and there they meet Maude. There’s also betrayal in this story too. I really enjoyed this book and my favorite part was the ghost story. ( )

"What Happens in Montana" uses a dual time storyline culminating in a modern murder. I didn't enjoy the plot line from the historical setting which created the ghost haunting the retreat center as much because Simone paid a high price for her mother's choices. From their Mommy and Me beginnings, four friends face the changes as their children grow up and out of their homes. Taking a long weekend retreat in Montana at a rundown 'holistic resort' set in the hills and forests so different from their homes, four women come face to face with betrayal, choices and healing.
