Wonderful, authoritative biography of one of the great figures of medieval Europe. Highly readable and the maps included were essential for someone like me who knows next to nothing about French geography. My reading experience was enhanced by the opportunity I had to see a production of The Lion in Winter, James Goldman's play about Richard's family, while about halfway through. "Richard I (8 September 1157? 6 April 1199) was King of England from 6 July 1189 until his death. He also ruled as Duke of Normandy (as Richard IV), Duke of Aquitaine, Duke of Gascony, Lord of Cyprus, Count of Anjou, Count of Maine, Count of Nantes, and Overlord of Brittany at various times during the same period. He was known as Richard Cœur de Lion, or Richard the Lionheart, even before his accession, because of his reputation as a great military leader and warrior. The Saracens called him Melek-Ric or Malek al-Inkitar? King of England."--Wikipedia. No library descriptions found. |
