"'When will the baby come?' Simon asks his pappa. Knowing how hard it is to wait and how much it helps to keep busy, Pappa starts Simon on a project of making one hundred chapatis, meant to be ready when mom and dad and the new baby come home. They measure the ingredients, knead and roll the dough, and then drop them one by one into a giant frying pan. Simon continues to be anxious. "Will the baby eat all my chapatis?" But it's not long before he is so busy that he forgets to worry. And before he knows it, Pappa is frying up the one hundredth chapati ... and the phone is ringing!"--… (mere)

First sentence: "When will the baby come?" Simon asked his pappa. "Your dad will call from the hospital as soon as your mom has the baby," said Pappa.

Premise/plot: A grandfather and grandson make one hundred chapatis [Indian flat bread] as they await news of the birth of the baby. It is a great way to pass time and super practical since it will be nice to have food on hand after the baby is born.

My thoughts: I liked this one. It is always nice when picture books celebrate family AND cooking AND culture. ( )

A boy and his Pappa wait for a call from the hospital to tell them the new baby has been born. The boy isn't excited about the addition to the family, but likes Pappa's idea to make 100 chapatis while they wait. This helps the family, and soon the boy can roll chapatis just as round as his grandfather's, instead of in "the shape of India." And he likes the idea of being the one to teach his new sibling how to make them - 200 chapatis! The story ends with a ringing phone.

Gentle, sweet; add this to SEL/parenting/caregiver collections and "new sibling" booklists. ( )
