"Secret Staircase Construction is under attack, and Tempest Raj feels helpless. After former client Julian Rhodes tried to kill his wife, he blamed her "accident" on the home renovation company's craftsmanship. Now the family business - known for bringing magic into homes through hidden doors, floating staircases, and architectural puzzle walls - is at a breaking point. No amount of Scottish and Indian meals from her grandfather can distract Tempest from the truth: they're being framed. When Tempest receives an urgent midnight phone call from Julian, she decides to meet him at the historic Whispering Creek Theater - only to find his dead body, a sword through his chest. After a blade appears from thin air to claim another victim, Tempest is certain they're dealing with a booby trap... something Secret Staircase Construction could easily build. Tempest refuses to wait for the investigation to turn to her or her loved ones. She knows the pieces of the puzzle are right in front of her, she just has to put them together correctly before more disaster strikes. Multiple award-winning author Gigi Pandian and her sleuth Tempest Raj return in A Midnight Puzzle, where an old theater reveals a deadly booby trap, secrets, and one puzzle of a mystery"--… (mere)

I loved reading this. The mystery has as many twists and turns as in a funhouse. Maybe more as you never know where there will be a sleight of hand. :) ( )

A Midnight Puzzle is the third book in the Secret Staircase Mysteries series by Gigi Pandian. Tempest Raj, magician, is working for her father’s construction company Secret Staircase Construction. They are being threatened with a law suit by a past client for a fall that left his wife in a coma and which he claims was the result of shoddy work by the company. He is found murdered by what appears to be a magician’s trick at the same theatre where both Tempest’s aunt and mother were murdered year’s earlier. Then two more people are injured including Nicodemus, Tempest’s mentor, followed by another murder. Rumours abound about a ghostly presence responsible but Tempest is sure that it must be another magician behind not only these present day murders but those of her aunt and mother and is determined to discover who’s responsible despite the very real danger.

This was a fun cozy mystery with an intriguing mystery, and some interesting and mostly likeable characters. The murders of Tempest’s mom and aunt which have been a major part of Tempest's back story are finally resolved here but the story ends with a hint of future mysteries for Tempest to solve with the aid of family and friends and, always, a bit of magical sleight-hand. And, if that’s not enough to entice you to check it out, there are also some simple vegan Indian recipes for dosa and mango ice cream at the end to tempt you.

Thanks to Netgalley and St Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review ( )

fiction/mystery (3rd in series, should definitely be read in order) - featuring 26-y.o. Scottish-Indian ex-magician Tempest Raj, set in a town on the east side of the San Francisco Bay area,, with tasty vegan/vegetarian recipes for quick dosa and chocolate almond spread, plus mango ice cream😋

We finally find out who killed Tempest's mom and aunt, and what Moriarty's whole deal is, though there is still room for Tempest to continue sleuthing if she wishes (or if, for some reason, the police keep naming her family members as prime suspects in local murder cases).

the first book in the series is my fave but I liked the conclusion, and I would definitely read more from this author.

april 2024 bingo challenge: includes a prologue (not named as such, but it precedes Chapter 1 and sets up the tensions of the story) ( )

Former stage magician and illusionist Tempest Raj is settling into her new life as a co-creator of secret rooms in her father’s construction firm, Secret Staircase Construction, when problems for the firm begin: after the wife of a client falls on a special staircase the company had built, putting her in a coma, the husband threatens to sue the company for negligence. It doesn’t matter that all signs point to the husband being the culprit, or that he has a history of such lawsuits, the situation is such that Secret Staircase Construction may be destroyed because of the lawsuit. So when the man is found murdered at the theater Tempest has rented for a final magic show, she feels relieved, but compelled to find out just who murdered the man, and why he was murdered in that particular place, the site of her own mother’s disappearance…. This is the third Secret Staircase novel, and by now Tempest, her family and her close friends have all become quite beloved characters whose antics and neuroses are quite believable. I had a bit of trouble early on, when Ms. Pandian repeated the same information several times; it felt like she didn’t trust her readers to remember items from one chapter to the next. However, that repetition resolved after a while and it was subsequently easy to go with the flow of the writing, which is quite enjoyable in itself. Having lived for many years in the San Francisco Bay Area, I also much appreciate the setting of the novels (as a slightly masked version of Berkeley), but obviously one doesn’t need to be a resident of the area to enjoy the stories! There is a resolution of some of Tempest’s major life mysteries at the end of this book, but fortunately Ms. Pandian in her Afterword mentions that she still has many more stories to tell about Tempest and her world, which is great because I definitely want to read more of them! Recommended, but start with “Under Lock and Skeleton Key,” the first in the series. ( )

A Midnight Puzzle is the third installment in Gigi Pandian's Secret Staircase Mystery series. A cozy mystery featuring a former illusionist who now works for her family's construction business, building secret gardens, hidden staircases, and puzzle rooms.

Tempest used to be a magician/illusionist until her career literally went up in flames. Now, she's back home with her father and grandparents (who live in a treehouse!! What?!) helping to design and build whatever crazy things their clients ask for. Their last client, Julian Rhodes, was difficult to work with, and after they finished, Julian's wife Paloma fell down their floating staircase and sues the family for doing shoddy work. When he calls Tempest and she meets him at the Whispering Creek Theater, she finds him dead at the front door, killed by a booby trap. Thus begins the roller coaster story.

This book had so many twists and was completely unpredictable. The police are ineffectual at finding the perpetrator, as their focused on Paloma but can't find her. Would she have known how to set up a booby trap to murder her husband? And why would she use the theater that Tempest is renting to do it? There's a relatively big cast of characters, and no one is safe from suspicion. There was a good amount of suspense and misdirection, and I would never have guessed whodunit.

All in all, this was an interesting cozy mystery featuring a loving family, a creative FMC, and twists galore. I haven't read the first two books in the series yet, but if they're as good as this one, then I recommend reading the whole series.

Thank you to @NetGalley and @Minotaur_Books for a digital copy for review consideration. All opinions are honest and my own. ( )
