This book illustrates a boy who refuses to give up his dream of playing baseball. He is discouraged throughout the book because he is not as good as Jackie Robison. He then goes to a game with his grandmother and realizes that Jackie also isn’t perfect but he still encourages him to do his best. At the end of the book, Franky decides he is never going to stop trying. This would be a great read aloud book for children because it would encourage them to do their best and to never give up. The illustrations depict the story line very well but do not depict all parts of the story so it could be difficult to follow the story with only the pictures on the page. Overall, this has been one of my favorite children’s books overall. ( )

Rachel Isadora tells the story of Luke, a young boy from Brooklyn who wants to play baseball, but none of the other kids ever let him play because he is small. So, Luke practices by himself until he felt like he was ready to play with the big kids. Luke's hero was Jackie Robinson, the first African-American in the MLB and he always dreamed of hitting a home run for himself. On his first try at bat, he struck out and was ridiculed by the other children. Luke is devastated until his grandmother tells him that she will take him to see Jackie Robinson play. Luke was ecstatic to see Jackie Robinson hit a home run in person and his grandma reminded him that "you can't give up. Even Jackie Robinson's got to keep trying." When they got home, Luke went to the roof to find the ball that Jackie Robinson had hit a home run with lying on the roof. And from that day on, Luke never gave up. ( )

This book teachers kids about self-worth as well as developing positive and realistic self-concepts. This book is about a boy whom was told he couldn't play baseball with the other children. One day he gets a chance but is not that good. However, he gets the opportunity to go see professionals play. Which puts a spark back in him. He begins to practice everyday and he goes back and plays with the kids and he HITS THE BALL!!! Learning he can do anything he puts his mind to with practice and perseverance.
