Marvin Sweeney's commentary is a welcome addition to the well-respected Old Testament Library series. It provides a careful and thoughtful analysis of the historical, linguistic, literary, and theological issues encountered in the books of 1 and 2 Kings.

Nevertheless, in spite of these critiques, Sweeney's insights into the books of 1 and 2 Kings are very helpful. Very few scholars possess his academic breadth which has resulted in an incredibly erudite reading of the books. This reviewer was especially impressed by Sweeney's exegetical restraint the majority of the time and by his outstanding appraisal of the relationship between Israel and Assyria. Sweeney's close historical analysis allows readers to understand better the theological statements being made by the authors and editors of 1 and 2 Kings. Pastors and scholars alike will do well to consult Sweeney's commentary in sermon preparation, Israelite historical study, Deuteronomistic studies, and broader inquiry into the theological portrayal of the monarchy in Israel. Though eschatological and Christological connections will have to be drawn by readers themselves, Sweeney has provided a great deal of material upon which to develop such conclusions.
