Weatherford excells at locating first person accounts and that makes her book interesting, lively and useful. This is a scholarly treatment, however, because the author organizes the topic into thematic perspectives and carefully documents her sources. She deals with Army and Navy nurses, Rosie the Riveters, WACs, WAVES, SPARs and Women Marines as well as housewives on the homefront. This is one of the best general scholarly treatments of women during World War II, standing with D'Anne Campbell's earlier study. ingen anmeldelser | tilføj en anmeldelse

This social history focuses on the role American women played in the workforce during World War II. It describes the huge mobilization of labour necessary to supply US armed forces with machinery and weapons, and the evolution of women's roles in industry as a result of this.
